Background

The (E86) Z4 M Coupe was BMW’s successor to the polarizing “clown shoe” Z3 M Coupe. With only 1,815 (North American Market) Z4 M Coupes produced between 2006 and 2008, it’s rare too. Unlike the Z3 M Coupe, which was a parts bin car, the Z4 M Coupe was designed from the onset with M and M Coupe variants in mind. As a result, the Z4 M Coupe has none of the shortcomings of its Z3 predecessor. The fastback roofline adds an air of elegance to the brutish, flame-surfaced lines of the Z4 roadster, while also adding rigidity. Underneath the sheet metal, you will find the last application of one of BMW’s greatest engines, the S54B32 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder, producing its 330 horsepower. That power is routed through a six-speed manual gearbox and delivered to the rear wheels through an advanced multi-link rear suspension. When it is time to stop, aluminum hub, cross-drilled floating brakes developed for the E46 M3 CSL make quick work of bringing the Z4 M Coupe’s 3230 pounds to rest. The Z4 M Coupe was one of the last of the old-school M car recipes: a high compression, high revving, normally aspirated inline six-cylinder engine powering only the rear wheels via a proper manual gearbox.

Summary

This 2007 BMW Z4 M Coupe is a fantastic example, finished in Black Sapphire Metallic over a Black leather and brushed aluminum trim. In addition to the standard M Coupe kit, factory options include the Premium Package: auto-dimming rearview mirror, power seats w/ memory, cruise control, Logic 7 professional sound system and heated seats, navigation, rain sensor, headlight washer system, and xenon headlight. It came to us on consignment from a good friend in trade for an Acura NSX. It was originally delivered on September 2007 in Georgia and remained there for two owners until our friend purchased it. He has owned it since 2010 (the Carfax reports two owners under his ownership due to a name change on the title, which is backed up by the maintenance records). Under his tenure it has been fastidiously maintained at Nalley BMW and independent specialists MBM of Decatur. Significant maintenance includes oxygen sensors, VANOS seals, engine mounts, the flex disc, and a fresh clutch at 49,600 miles in 2019. In preparation for sale we reset the S54 valve adjustment interval with an S54 valve adjustment, spark plugs, oil pump relief valve O-ring, brake fluid flush, and a fresh oil change. Cosmetically we replaced the windshield cowling and outer gasket, along with mounting fresh Continental ExtremeContact tires. As it sits, this is a turn-key Z4 M Coupe ready to be enjoyed by its new owner. We would like to find someone who will maintain its ownership pedigree for the next chapter of its story.

Exterior

Black Sapphire Metallic is a great color for the Z4 M Coupes, accentuating it’s swooping body lines without being as prone to visual imperfections as gloss black is. The paint is in good condition, with few rock chips thanks to being from Georgia’s Southern climate; the hood, front bumper, driver’s door, and driver’s fender have been repainted. The body is clean and the panel gaps are even, with a few scratches and small dings, but nothing overly glaring. There is no rust. The roundels are clear and glossy. The black trim is in good shape with little notable UV fade; we replaced the plastic windshield cowling in preparation for sale. The windshield is OEM glass with moderate pitting; the rest of the glass around the car is excellent. The headlights, corner markers, and taillights are all clear and crack-free. The Style 224 wheels are straight and true; the passenger side rear has some minor curb rash. They are wrapped in freshly mounted Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 all-season tires.

Interior

The interior is likewise in very good condition. Sit down and it is apparent that this is a proper sports car. It has a cockpit-like feel, with a low seating position that lets you look out over the long hood out front. The headliner does not sag and is free of stains or tears. The seat leather has no notable wear other than some minor creasing. The dashboard has no warping or cracks, the NAV screen extends and retracts correctly. All instrument cluster functions work as they should, and no check lights are illuminated. The door cards are in excellent shape; the window switch surrounds have some minor scratching. The carpets have no stains or tears and have been protected by factory floor mats. All seat functions work, as do the seat heaters. The heat blows hot the air conditioning blows cold. The center console and shifter surround are clean, with a handful of minor nicks on the aluminum trim. The only major nitpick is a broken latch inhibiting the access of the small center storage console behind the seats. The auto dimming mirrors all work great. The owner’s manual and two keys are included with the sale.

Mechanical

This is a turn-key Z4 M Coupe; all major and preventative maintenance is up to date. As stated in the summary paragraph, it has recently benefitted from some significant maintenance items being completed. This includes a fresh valve adjustment, oil change, oil pump relief valve, and a brake fluid flush. It also had the clutch and driveshaft flex disc replaced just over 1,000 miles ago. Everything else on the car received a clean bill of health. The S54 fires on command, idles smoothly, and pulls very strongly to redline. There are no VANOS issues thanks to having the seals replaced or rod bearing issues thanks to its lower mileage. The clutch take-up is smooth, and the shifter is smooth and precise. There are no driveline or wheel bearing noises or vibrations. The suspension is tight, and the brakes are firm. We look forward to finding an owner who will continue to care for it and appreciate it as much as we do.
